The house band on these hits was The Meters, and they also backed Irma Thomas, Chris Kenner and Ernie K Doe in their regular visits to the R&B and Hot 100 charts. Back in New Orleans, Allen joined with Marshall Sehorn to form the Sansu label and produced a run of big hits for Lee Dorsey, including Allen’s songs ‘Ride Your Pony’ and ‘Working in a Coalmine’. One can almost hear tree branches rustling in the breeze as he recounts his experience. Toussaint's gentle voice and slight Creole accent takes one back to a night in the 1940s where his family is gathering in rural Louisiana where elec-tri-city still has not made its way. Music took a back seat in 1963-65, as Allen served in the Army. Among Toussaint’s best-loved artist collaborations was his long-running professional relationship with Irma Thomas, who recorded this song, now a standard in the New Orleans songbook. His 13-minute rendition of Southern Nights is magical.
